But Moyes' interest may provoke action from Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal, who have been monitoring the 21-year-old's progress. Everton may initially try to do a loan deal with Sporting.
Moyes is thought to be heading to Switzerland this week to see Portugal's final two group games at Euro 2008. Moutinho starred in his country's 2-0 win over Turkey on Saturday.
Moyes is already interested in Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone and considering Manchester City’s Michael Johnson and USA star Michael Bradley if he misses out.
