Everton boss Moyes must decide whether to challenge FA over dismissal

manager David Moyes is undecided about whether to contest his Football
Association misconduct charge resulting from his sending-off on Sunday.

Moyes was sent to the stands during the 3-2 victory over at the Britannia Stadium for arguing with referee Alan Wiley over a handball by Stoke defender Leon Cort.

Wiley gave a free-kick outside the penalty area for the offence, although replays showed the offence clearly took place inside the box.

Following his dismissal the Scot has now been charged for his behaviour on the
touchline and given until October 2 to respond.

Speaking at the press conference prior to Everton's UEFA Cup clash with Standard Liege, Moyes said he had yet to make up his mind about his next move but revealed Wiley had contacted him for a chat about the incident.

The Everton boss would not discuss the contents of the conversation but said Wiley now had "a great deal more respect" from him after picking up the phone.

'Contesting it? I am not sure yet, I have not made a decision on that," said Moyes on his FA charge.

'The FA have to do their job, I have to do my job, I had my opinion at the time. The referee has since contacted me - that conversation will remain private - and that is it.

'We have a Respect campaign that is really important but you can't just put a big label on it.

'You earn respect and I have to say the referee has earned a great deal more respect from me by what he has said from me.'

Moyes was  understandably more eager to discuss tomorrow's first round first leg against the Belgian side who were knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool in a qualifier.

And he is hoping the 90 minutes at Goodison Park will herald Everton's first clean sheet of the season.

'The players have been really reliable, we have good defenders but maybe one or two early mistakes have cost us goals and we hope we can get rid of them and
get back to the clean sheets,' he said.

'There have been a lot of goals scored in the Premier League. At this
particular time it looks as if we are having to score three to win, last season
there were lots of games we won 1-0 and we had a strong base from that.

'It is good if we win 3-2 but it is also good if we win 1-0, so I am looking to tighten up and certainly in this game not concede any goals.'

Moyes believes Liege, having pushed Liverpool all the way, will ask some tough questions of his side.

However, after Everton's strong showing in the competition last term - eventually losing to Fiorentina in the last 16 on penalties - Moyes is quietly confident his team will again be one of those to beat this season.

'They are a good side and you saw how close they were to taking Liverpool to penalty kicks," he added.

'They will have taken confidence from that and their play but it is a different competition now.

'We did very well in the UEFA Cup last season. We played 10, won eight, lost one and drew one and we beat Zenit St Petersburg here so Everton are a good side.

'Last year in Europe we grew in confidence and the belief that we can play well so we will try to show that again in these two games.'
