Everton fail to break down Palace

Everton were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their final pre-season friendly. James Scowcroft had the first real chance, breaking forward in the second minute before Tim Howard came out to smother the ball.

After Clinton Morrison's effort for Palace, summer recruit Phil Jagielka volleyed Mikel Arteta's free-kick against the bar.

Arteta's penalty claims a few minutes later were unsuccessful but the Toffees pressed forward, Victor Anichebe, directing a cross against the bar.

Andy Johnson, given a rapturous reception from both sets of supporters, wasted a good headed chance before Arteta went close with a free-kick.

Lee Carsley tested Scott Flinders with a volley and Joseph Yobo missing a headed effort.
