Everton ink new deals for Cahill and Arteta

Everton may face a further anxious wait in their pursuit of Phil Jagielka, but they were still celebrating a significant breakthrough yesterday after securing the longterm futures of Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill on five-year contracts.

Arteta was constantly linked with a return to Spain last season, while Cahill was thought to be a candidate to replace England Under 21 captain Nigel Reo-Coker at West Ham.

Jagielka is expected to complete his £4m move to Goodison once a verdict has been announced on Sheffield United's appeal against relegation.
