Metz defender Sebastien Bassong is training with Newcastle in the hope of securing a move.
Bassong had been interesting Everton but Newcastle have stolen a march by inviting the 22-year-old to Tyneside.
Bassong said: ‘It's a very good thing for me. Newcastle are not nothing. I will give everything and we will see how my situation is later.’
Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan has also offered a trial to Bulgarian 16-year-old defender Georgy Terziev. He had a previous spell with United in April.
