Everton wait for next move over McFadden as McLeish plans Cahill bid

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is lining up a £4million move for Aston Villa defender Gary Cahill.

If he can persuade Villa to sell, Cahill, 22, would link up with former Villa Park team-mate Liam Ridgewell.

McLeish is also planning his next move in pursuit of Everton's James McFadden after a £2.5m bid was rejected.

Meanwhile Martin Laursen has spelt out his desire to remain at Villa as the central defender prepares for further contract talks with the midlands club.

The Danish international is out of contract in the summer and could leave on a Bosman transfer.

But the former AC Milan player has indicated a desire to stay if his "reasonable" demands are deemed acceptable by Villa.

Laursen has convinced Villa manager Martin O'Neill of his fitness by being an ever present in the Premier League this season after three years of knee problems.

And he again proved his worth as an attacking threat by scoring his sixth goal of the campaign during Saturday's 3-1 win over Reading at Villa Park.
