EXCLUSIVE - Ronaldo: I will rule the world

Cristiano Ronaldo has vowed to prove he is the best footballer in the world.

The Manchester United winger is a near certainty to pick up England's two Player of the Year awards this season after scoring a remarkable 37 goals to draw comparisons with Old Trafford idols such as George Best and Eric Cantona.

And as the 23-year-old prepared to face Arsenal at Old Trafford tomorrow, he outlined his determination to one day be officially crowned the world's No 1 footballer.

Ronaldo said last night: "I am concentrating on the Premier League and Champions League, but my ultimate aim is to be the best in the world. I work every day towards that, but only God knows if, one day, I will eventually get that Ballon d'Or, which is so important to me."

The Portugal winger added: "I am living through one of the best periods of my career. I'm in good physical shape and I'm working hard. Thanks to that, the goals and results have arrived."

The FIFA World Player of the Year and European Player of the Year (Ballon d'Or) titles are held by AC Milan's Brazil forward Kaka. Ronaldo came third in the former and second in the latter last year.

With the Premier League and Champions League titles to aim for, this could be a huge season for Ronaldo.

Labelled the "best player in the world" by Cantona yesterday and spoken of now in the same breath as Best, he has left an indelible footprint on the season.

He recently broke Best's record for the most goals scored by a winger for United in a season.

Ronaldo was yesterday one of six nominees for the PFA Player of the Year.

The others are Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Cesc Febregas, Emmanuel Adebayor and David James.
