EXCLUSIVE: Diamond back again to sparkle for Ellison

Carte Diamond, one of the unluckiest horses in training, is on the verge of an amazing comeback. The seven-year-old has returned to trainer Brian Ellison's Yorkshire stable and commenced a training programme that his trainer hopes will see him racing in May.

The gelding, who was second to Sergeant Cecil in the 2005 Ebor Handicap and has won five of his 11 starts, has not run since he finished ninth that year in the Caulfield Cup in Australia.

That was considered a good trial for the Melbourne Cup, but Ellison's enterprise in sending him on the 10,000-mile journey Down Under was not rewarded by good fortune.

In a freak accident only days before the big race, Carte Diamond unseated his jockey Weichong Marwing and became impaled on a railing.

Remaining in Australia and nursed back to fitness so he could run in the following season's Melbourne Cup, Carte Diamond then developed tendon trouble.

Ellison said: 'He is back cantering and is bucking and squealing and looks a million dollars.

'Just about everything went wrong with him, he also had foot problems and colic and when he was impaled it went through his inner thigh and out his back end.

'The plan is to get him back on track in May. The Northumberland Plate would be on the agenda but it will take some doing after he has been off so long.'

Another long-term absentee, Celestial Gold, returns in the opening novices' hurdle at Hereford this afternoon.

It is almost two years since the gelding won the Grade Two Betfair Bowl at Aintree but trainer David Pipe is planning for the gelding's third attempt at the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

There are 42 initial entries for the big race, dominated by Paul Nicholls' duo Denman and Kauto Star. A KEMPTON treble (107-1) yesterday on Rollin 'n Tumblin, Perfect Practice and Bold Diva made it 10 winners since Christmas for in-form apprentice Kirsty Milczarek.

She leads Andrew Elliott (17-14) in the race to be top apprentice for the all-weather season.
