EXCLUSIVE: Very smart Wayne, but don't forget to pack your tights

Wayne Rooney's macho pose, draped in the flag of St George, will strike fear in the hearts of Russia — until they find out England will probably be wearing tights for next week's Euro 2008 qualifier.

It's not just those freezing Moscow nights that are worrying Steve McClaren — the England coach is concerned his players will suffer friction burns on the Russians' plastic pitch next Wednesday.

Rooney: Hoping to do England proud

England have trained on the artificial turf at Arsenal's London Colney training ground this week but none of the players has risked the effects of a full-blooded tackle on the surface.

Although UEFA have approved the Luzhniki Stadium, the pitch fibres are so coarse that players have complained that it is like "being put through a meat slicer".

Which is why McClaren has ordered a supply of tights to be packed in the kit hamper next week, although there is no truth in reports that players refusing to wear them will be suspendered!
