Fabio Capello happy with England's progress after win in Trinidad

Fabio Capello is confident England are heading in the right direction as his first phase as head coach ended satisfactorily with an emphatic 3-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago.

A brace from Jermain Defoe and Gareth Barry's first goal for his country ensured a comfortable victory before the real tests get under way with the 2010 World Cup qualifiers in the autumn.

Aston Villa skipper Barry completed a memorable night by also wearing the captain's armband for the first time with England after David Beckham was substituted at half-time.

Satisfied: Fabio Capello leaves the pitch a happy man after England's emphatic win over Trinidad & Tobago.

Capello is happy with the progress that has been made during his four games in charge since he replaced Steve McClaren six months ago.

He said:  "We played a good game and all the players showed a good attitude and good concentration.

"In the first half we scored two goals quickly and we followed that up by showing good concentration, which was very important.

"For us the visit to play here in very warm weather has been a very good exercise and I am very happy because we played a very good game.

"We had a lots of chances to score goals and there was only one chance for Trinidad and Tobago. This is very good for me. They did everything I asked of them.

"It is not easy at this stage, the finish of the season, to play away but the mattitude of the players was very good.

"They have been very good in training. It is very different, playing friendly games to training, and I saw a lot of positive things."

The Italian, who will now take in part of the Euro 2008 finals, added: "I am pleased with the four games. Every game we have gone forward step by step.

"Every game for me has been very important. Every game we are getting better.

"I am very happy because the players that stayed with the team came here and played very well.

"I have learnt a lot. I know better the players, the players know me better.

"I know the characteristics of the players during the games. This is very important.

"I hope we will be even better and for the qualifiers we will be OK."

Stewart Downing was instrumental in laying on the first two goals as England ensured there would be no upset within the first quarter of the game.

The Middlesbrough winger released the overlapping Wayne Bridge to cross for Barry to volley home from close range.

Then his own pass played in Defoe, who had all the time to pick his spot before drilling a low shot past Clayton Ince into the corner of the net.

Defoe rounded off the scoring early in the second half after two of Capello's substitutes, David Bentley and Peter Crouch, had combined to create the opening.
