Too hot to hold: Federer never lost his serve against Muller
Four-time champion Roger Federer weathered a battle against Luxembourg qualifier Gilles Muller to book his place in the U.S. Open semi-final with a 7-6 6-4 7-6 win on Thursday.
On a sweltering afternoon in New York, the second-seeded Swiss was tested to the full by a player ranked 130th in the world before sealing victory in two hours 26 minutes.
Federer, seeking his fifth consecutive U.S. Open title but his first grand slam crown of the year, edged Muller 7-5 in the third-set tiebreak to win his 32nd consecutive match at Flushing Meadows.
'It was really difficult today and Gilles has played a fantastic tournament,' a relieved Federer said in a courtside interview.
'He was won more matches than all of us, and that is why a straight-sets win is the best result. I'm really happy with the way I pulled it out at the end because I thought it was going to four (sets).'
Federer's opponent in the last four will be either American favourite Andy Roddick or third-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic.
