Fergie and Jose call for calm over Euro clashes

Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho last night moved to calm fears of more crowd violence ahead of their Champions League matches tonight.

Manchester United manager Ferguson promised Roma fans they will be safe at Old Trafford following bloody scenes during the first leg of their quarter-final in the Italian capital last week.

Flare-up: Manchester United promise Roma fans will be safe at Old Trafford after last week's ugly scenes in the Stadio Olimpico

Chelsea boss Mourinho, whose team face a battle for survival in Valencia, said: "I hope the fans get on and have a beer or two. Not too many, though."

Around 5,000 Roma supporters are expected in Manchester, where United need to pull back a 2-1 deficit. With tensions running high after United fans were attacked by Italian police and Roma fans last week, Ferguson has demanded a detailed investigation by UEFA.

But last night he said: "I don't expect any problems at all.

"The Roma fans should not fear a thing. Security at Old Trafford is fantastic. I don't think the Roma fans will have any trouble in our stadium.

"We stayed over in Italy after the game last week, so we missed a lot of what people were seeing in England.

"But there have been one or two photographs I've seen which don't look nice at all."

Roma captain Francesco Totti added a plea for calm, saying: "I want our fans to be happy and for them to enjoy the experience of being here."

Manchester police expect many Italian fans to arrive without tickets and are also on the lookout — helped by colleagues from Italy — for members of Roma's hooligan fringe, the so-called Ultras.

Chelsea go into tonight's Spanish fixture at 1-1 after last week's trouble-free leg at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho emphasised: "It is a chance for people of different cultures and languages to get together.

"I hope Chelsea can be proud of their fans and that Valencia too can contribute to a positive atmosphere, just like there was at Stamford Bridge where there were no problems whatsoever."
