Fergie warns Spurs: I'm happy with my squad and may give up hunt for Berbatov

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he may not buy anybody this summer

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he may not buy anybody this summer, which suggests he maybe resigning himself to losing the battle to sign Dimitar Berbatov.

Ferguson has been linked with a host of big-name targets since landing the European Cup in May, but has not yet added to the United squad.

It is believed that Ferguson hasn't given up on signing Tottenham's striker Berbatov, but with time running out until the transfer window closes the deal becomes more unlikely.

'We are still researching and looking but it is not easy and certainly we are not desperate,' said Ferguson.

'We might well start 2008-09 with largely the squad we had last season - and
after all, they didn't do too badly.

'We have not brought in the kind of top-quality player everyone seems to be expecting.

In Nani, who will be suspended in their Premier League opener against Newcastle, and Anderson, who is on Olympic duty with Brazil, United have two men likely to show significant improvement on their first year at Old Trafford.

Angola striker Manucho is due to apply for a work permit and success of that, plus the emergence of Rafael da Silva at right-back and the failure to get Berbatov for a price he feels is realistic could be enough to convince Ferguson he does not require any new blood.

It could also be interpreted as a warning to Spurs that

'We have the right balance of youth and experience thanks to the work we did in the transfer market the previous year.

'In terms of numbers we have been boosted by the return from loan of several
young players who have the potential to go all the way.

'So I think we already have the men for the job.'

United already face injury problems as the new season approaches, with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo among those injured.

But United supporters will need no reminding of the strengths of the current squad after last season.

United landed the Premier League title by two points from Chelsea, and then famously beat the Londonders in Moscow to win the club's third European Cup.
