Fergie's keen on his Carrick

Sir Alex Ferguson has praised midfielder Michael Carrick for ensuring Roy Keane has not been missed at Old Trafford.

Manchester United did a deal for Carrick in the summer that could be worth £18 million to Tottenham and the midfielder has been an inspiration this season.

On Tuesday he will try to emulate his two spectacular goals against Roma when United meet AC Milan in the Champions League semi-final and manager Ferguson said: "In the last few weeks he has been absolutely sensational and has got me six goals as well.

"We knew about Carrick when he was a gangly kid at Newcastle. He was just a big skin and bones player when he went to West Ham. But you could see he had good talent.

"When he moved to Tottenham you could see more improvement. And last season I thought it was the right time to get him when he was 25.

"Physically he has matured. You can see the strength in him now. I must say the last few weeks he has been brilliant."
