Mapgies legend: Sirrel at the start of his second and most successful spell with Notts County
Sir Alex Ferguson led the tributes to former Notts County manager Jimmy Sirrel following his death on Thursday at the age of 86.
The Manchester United boss, a good friend of Sirrel, said: ‘All I can say is that I’d be confident in Jimmy Sirrel managing a team I supported.
‘People like Jimmy have had to work with either no money or little money and if you look at his career, you’ll see he’s done fantastically well.’
Glasgow-born Sirrel played for Celtic, Bradford, Aldershot and Brighton before taking charge of the Football League’s oldest club in 1969, leading them to the top flight in his second spell as boss in 1981.
Hailed as the Magpies’ greatest manager, he had three spells in charge — from 1969-75, 1978-82 and 1985-87 and also managed Brentford and Sheffield United.
