Fiery Flintoff is ready to take on New Zealand, claims former golden boy Trescothick

Andrew Flintoff is "ready to go" for the first Test against New Zealand and is already bowling at his best. The informed report comes from a qualified source — Flintoff's former England teammate Marcus Trescothick, who was given a testing time by the Lancastrian at Old Trafford yesterday.

Flintoff sent down 16 overs and took two wickets — to reach a first-class tally of 300 — as Lancashire dismissed Somerset for 238.

Flintoff: 'Bowled very well'

Somerset opener Trescothick relied on some dropped catches to top score with 77, but perhaps his most telling contribution was his verdict on Flintoff, who was playing only his second first-class match after a fourth bout of surgery on his left ankle last autumn.

Trescothick said: "That's as good as he'll bowl. I don't think he'll get into a Test against New Zealand in a couple of weeks' time and bowl any differently.

"It was tough against him. He bowled really well with consistent pace. It was normal Freddie — you never would have known he'd had much of a lay-off."
