Flintoff on track for May Test comeback

Andrew Flintoff could still make a surprise comeback for England in the first Test against New Zealand in less than a month.

England coach Peter Moores refuses to dismiss Flintoff's hopes of winning his 68th cap at Lord's on May 15, despite him just having returned to first-class cricket for Lancashire against Surrey last week following a fourth operation on his ankle.

"If Freddie is playing well enough and ticks all the right boxes, we'll have no problems picking him," said Moores last night.

"It's exciting, as we all know how much he is committed to the whole process of getting fit. The prospect of getting back England's premier all-rounder is a terrific thing.

"One of the most promising things is that Fred is enjoying his cricket. He has a smile on his face. The last time we saw him internationally was in the Twenty20 World Cup when he was bowling in excess of 85mph on one leg."

England national selector Geoff Miller watched Flintoff at The Oval and the selectors will monitor him this week against Somerset at Old Trafford, knowing the player himself is keen to be back for England as soon as possible.

"I would love to be involved on May 15, there is obviously no change there," said Flintoff. "But I know I have to perform.

"It's nice to get 28 overs under my belt and bowl quite nicely, but I have to score some runs as well, which I am working hard to do and fully aware of."

While Lancashire had to give in to the rain yesterday, elsewhere in Division One Essex beat Northamptonshire by nine wickets at Chelmsford thanks to Ryan ten Doeschate's three for 23.
