Accrington defender banned for eight months

Accrington Stanley defender Peter Cavanagh has been suspended from all football activities for eight months for betting on the result of a match in which he was playing.

The Football Association also fined Cavanagh £3,500.

Cavanagh played the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 loss to Bury on the last weekend of the 2008 League Two season.

The defender was accused of including the match in a £5 accumulator bet.

Regulatory commission chairman Nicholas Stewart said: "These were repeated deliberate breaches of the Football Association's betting rules which are vital to maintain confidence in the integrity of the game."
