Ambrose rewarding Burley

Whatever George Burley achieves or doesn't achieve as Crystal Palace manager, his highly persuasive tone with Selhurst Park hero Darren Ambrose has proved invaluable.

It looked certain that Ambrose would follow Neil Warnock across London to QPR in the summer. But then Burley arrived and Ambrose signed a new deal, celebrating with a goal in the opening day win over Leicester.

Two months out with a leg injury coincided with Palace sliding to the bottom of the table. They are still in the bottom three but Ambrose has returned to the team with three goals in three starts, including two in the 2-0 win over Coventry on Saturday.

"When I arrived it was 100 per cent sure Darren was going to leave. But I'd brought him up as a kid at Ipswich, giving him his debut," said Burley.

Meanwhile, Watford manager Malky Mackay was left scratching his head as his team gave away a 2-1 lead for the second successive match to lose
3-2 at high-flying Burnley.
