Anfield test will show we can win the title, says Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger today vowed Arsenal will fire a title warning to their Premier League rivals by beating Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The Gunners face a testing opener against Roy Hodgson's rejuvenated side as they bid to win a trophy for the first time since the 2005 FA Cup success.

"We have a tough start against Liverpool but it is a good opportunity to show that we are ready to fight for the title," said Wenger.

"The team is ready, ambitious and prepared to fight.

"It is a good thing to start at Liverpool because you know you are going into a game where maximum concentration is demanded.

"We are encouraged by a good pre-season and that's why we go there with belief and aim to fire on all cylinders."

Wenger confirmed that he is continuing to scour the market for a new centre-back but is not expecting any new arrivals before Sunday.

Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen, who formed the heart of Arsenal's defence in last weekend's 6-5 friendly win over Legia Warsaw, will, therefore start at Anfield.

Wenger recognises the need to strengthen his squad further to help Arsenal compete in a season where there are a host of contenders for the title.

"Having seen the Community Shield you expect Chelsea and Manchester United will be in there again," added Wenger.

"It could be a race between six or seven teams. It is important to be consistent and win the big games.

"We have an advantage that we know each other well and we know how we want to play. If you look at the expectation level this team gave a lot last year. But we want to improve from that and I believe we can."

Wenger will make a late decision on the inclusion of World Cup finalists Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie, while Alex Song and Denilson are set to miss out with groin and calf problems respectively. France international Abou Diaby is set to return from a calf injury, however.
