Arsenal can relax with Thomas Vermaelen

Manuel Almunia says Arsenal's defenders have already learned to trust Thomas Vermaelen after only two games alongside the £10million signing.

The 23-year-old has impressed in both outings this season as he partners William Gallas at the heart of the Gunners' rearguard.

Manager Arsene Wenger has expressed his surprise at the ease with which the Belgian has settled at Emirates Stadium and Almunia believes he has instilled a calmness in the backline following Kolo Toure's move to Manchester City.

"Thomas Vermaelen has been a good signing," said the goalkeeper. "He is a very relaxed player, and that makes the people around him relaxed as well.

"We are all very confident about this player. Kolo was one of the best defenders at Arsenal over the last few years and I hope Thomas can reach the same level."
