Arsenal united in their belief that season will have a silver lining

Cesc Fabregas today insisted he never stopped believing Arsenal could end their trophy drought this season after the Gunners stayed within two points of Premier League leaders Manchester United with their 2-0 victory over West Ham.

Arsene Wenger's side have twice been dismissed as no-hopers after comprehensive defeats to United and Chelsea yet they have bounced back to remain within touching distance of the summit with just seven games left.

With a Champions League quarter-final to come against Barcelona, Arsenal are set to fight for silverware on two fronts and Fabregas said: "A lot of people said we would not make it at the start of the season.

"They thought we'd be in the position of Liverpool in terms of fighting for fourth spot. But, I was definitely not one of those people.

"I have always said if I don't believe I can win something, I wouldn't play football. I play football to win and enjoy and that is what I am doing here."

Wenger believes the manner of Saturday's victory, coming courtesy of goals from Denilson and Fabregas and in spite of playing the entire second half with 10 men after Thomas Vermaelen's red card, proves Arsenal have the momentum behind them to mount a serious title challenge.

"If you had listened to all of the predictions then we should not have even bothered starting the championship and we would have paid not to go down," said the Gunners boss.

"We are in a strong position but have to focus on our quality and continue to improve. With the results we are making, we can only go from game to game. We have the desire and let's see how far we can go.

"I believe we can go and win the next games. We have that kind of attitude. If it's 0-0 with 10 minutes to go, we have to throw all the strikers on. We keep pushing for the win rather than the draw."

Meanwhile, Hammers boss Gianfranco Zola insists his side showed enough to suggest they can avoid relegation this season.

He said: "It is close but if we managed to maintain the same performance over 90 minutes that we managed in the first half of this game I am confident we will stay up.

"We looked very good in the first half so hopefully we are going to be doing that for 90 minutes tomorrow against Wolves."
