Andrew had managed only two goals in three injury-hit years at Selhurst Park but his fine looping header put Palace 2-0 ahead and saw them into the fourth round after Boro pulled one back through Merouane Zemmama.
Andrew - who suffered two knee ligament injuries at Palace and has been loaned to Brighton, Millwall and Swindon - was very much on the outside until last night's call.
After being beaten by Boro at home in the Championship on Saturday, Freedman gave Andrew (above) his chance and the striker said of his goal: "It was probably one of the hardest opportunities I had, I don't take them the easy way!"
Andrew's last Palace goal was 17 months ago and he added: "A striker is always judged on goals and if you're not scoring, the manager has always got a reason to say, 'someone else is scoring'. But I feel I can get into the squad."
Freedman said: "He doesn't score many because he doesn't get many chances. But when he does play, he puts in a great effort."
Wilfried Zaha, 18, scored a tremendous opener that fizzed into the net off the near left post.
Palace's 17-year-old midfield starlet Jonny Williams has been offered a much-improved senior contract and Sean Scannell is expected to sign a four-year deal.
Millwall crashed out of the Cup, 5-0 at Wolves, meaning they have gone four games without a goal.
