Christian Dailly never felt so low but is up for battle now

Christian Dailly admits nothing in football will compare to the heartache he suffered when Charlton lost their play-off semi-final against Swindon and is desperate to make amends.

The 36-year-old is preparing for his 21st season in the game and has witnessed the highs and lows of promotion and relegation.

But the former Scotland international still has nightmares of the penalty shoot-out defeat at The Valley in May which cost his side the chance to gain promotion back to the Championship.

Dailly said: "It's probably as disappointed as I've ever been in my career. It was a very down dressing room afterwards, the worst I've seen, to be honest. It took a good month to get over it. So we need to crack on this year and make amends."

Charlton have been forced to make a number of changes to their squad during the summer.
Former captain Nicky Bailey, who missed the crucial spot kick, has joined Middlesbrough while teenage sensation Jonjo Shelvey has been lost to Liverpool.

Dailly, though, is adamant there is still enough quality in the squad to push for promotion.

"There's no doubt about it, the aim is to go up," he said. "There has been a big turnaround again, and a huge number of players have left.

"Again, the manager is having to do a massive job to turn the team into one capable of promotion. But there is a good main bulk of players here that can do well for us, and we've got some good young lads coming through."

Dailly is thrilled Charlton have offered him a new one-year deal and the former Blackburn and West Ham defender still believes he has something to offer.

He said: "I really enjoyed myself last year, so I just want to continue on from that and hopefully do even better this year. I like to play for clubs who are really trying to achieve something. The important thing is getting up, so that's all I'm really focusing on now."
