Didier Drogba faces four-match Euro ban after sending-off

Didier Drogba could miss the first four games of Chelsea's next Champions League campaign following his sending-off in last night's defeat by Inter Milan.

Drogba must serve an automatic two-match ban after receiving a straight red card for stamping on Thiago Motta during the closing stages of Inter's 1-0 victory but that punishment may be doubled because of previous offences.

The Ivory Coast striker was suspended for three matches for his rant at referee Tom Henning Ovrebo during last season's semi-final defeat by Barcelona, a penalty which also carried the threat of a further two-game ban if Drogba stepped out of line again.

UEFA are still awaiting the report from last night's referee Wolfgang Stark before deciding on their next move but Drogba's position could be vulnerable.

He was also sent off in the 2008 Champions League Final in Moscow for pushing Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic in the face.

Drogba said last night's dismissal had been "difficult to take".

He added: "I stepped on Motta's calf but I don't think it deserved a red card.

"It was just something that happened in the game but the most important thing is that we are out of the competition."

As well as Drogba, skipper John Terry could also find himself in trouble with the governing body for his behaviour at the end of the game last night.

The former England captain was seen berating the fourth official, Thorsten Kinhofer, and gesturing angrily at him as he walked off the pitch contemplating another failure for the Blues in Europe's premier club competition.

Chelsea were unlucky not to be given at least one penalty after Drogba was wrestled to the ground by Walter Samuel as the home side prepared to take a corner in the first half.
