Dougie Freedman satisfied with Crystal Palace's draw at Bristol City

Dougie Freedman refused to criticise his Crystal Palace players for surrendering a two-goal lead as they left Bristol City with just a point.

Substitute Brett Pitman struck twice in the closing stages, including a last-gasp equaliser, to reward a spirited fightback by struggling City.

But Freedman was far from downcast after seeing Wilfried Zaha and Darren Ambrose, from the penalty spot, score for the visitors.

"I thought the lads were outstanding," he said. "We were the better side and played some great football to go two goals up.

"It's not like us to concede as we did in the closing stages, but this is a difficult place to come and I cannot fault the players.

"Wilfried Zaha is an exciting young player who works hard at his game. He scored a quality goal, but doesn't always come up with an end product. That will improve as he gains more experience.

"I thought we looked dangerous all through the game and might have had more goals. The result was a disappointment, but otherwise I couldn't be happier."

The impressive Zaha broke clear down the right to fire a fierce drive past David James from a narrow angle after 13 minutes.

And it looked all over for City when Ambrose
doubled the advantage with a 68th minute penalty after a foul by Liam Fontaine on Glenn Murray was spotted by a linesman.

Yet Pitman, who replaced Yannick Bolasie in the 70th minute, gave City hope with a 25-yard free-kick and did it again in injury time, lashing home an unstoppable volley from 15 yards with the aid of a slight deflection.

City boss Derek McInnes was left furious at the penalty decision against his side. "Fontaine twice had his shirt pulled by Murray in the build-up," he said.

"None of the officials noticed that and then the linesman flags for a foul by our player.

"After that the lads showed tremendous spirit to get a point.

"Brett Pitman is probably the best finisher we have. He has had to be patient in awaiting his opportunities and could do no more than he did tonight.

"Having been a player myself, I know how frustrating it can be to be left out. Brett has responded in the perfect manner."
