Edin Dzeko looks forward to Manchester City 'project'

New Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko is looking forward to joining the club's "project" after being unveiled this afternoon.

The Bosnian, who signed from Wolfsburg for £27million last weekend, admitted it had been hard to leave Germany but he was lured by joining a side chasing the Barclays Premier League title.

He said: "I'm very pleased. I'm here at a big club like Manchester City with big ambition.

"I saw something else in Man City. It's a big club and I'm an ambitious player and I think we can have a lot of success together.

"It's a project. I need to say it's a very good team with a very good coach. It was three-and-a-half beautiful years with Wolfsburg and we had a lot of success, winning the league for the first time in our history.

"I was very happy there but I wanted to change, try something new and better and that's why I'm here."

Dzeko also made reference to the club's rivalry with Manchester United, adding: "I hear a lot about the fans and that most of the people from Manchester are Manchester City fans.

"I don't know too much about the rivalry but I hear the derby is something special."

City manager Roberto Mancini hailed the 24-year-old as the "perfect" signing.

"I am very happy the club bought Dzeko," said the Italian. "I think he'll be a very important player for the future of this club.

"We wanted him in the summer because we knew he was the perfect player for us. He is different from the other players we have. Now we have a good mix. I hope he can score a lot of goals like in Germany.

"I think we spoke with him six months ago for the first time," he said. "We wanted to know if there was a chance to buy him but we do this now in January.

"It's important because now we are in a good position in the league. With one player like him we can improve in the Barclays Premier League and the Europa League. We have more chances in this moment."

Dzeko scored 10 goals in the first 17 games of the Bundesliga season and Mancini has no doubt Dzeko will continue his goalscoring form in England.

Mancini added: "He has quality, he has a good attitude, a good mentality... he's a strong player and he has experience but he is young. These are all things that are very important for the club.

"If one striker scores in Germany or Italy I think they score in England. The Barclays Premier League is difficult but I'm sure it will continue.

"For me he is one of the best strikers in Europe. With the other strikers we have we can have one of the best attacks in Europe."
