Everton suffer Jack Rodwell injury blow

Everton midfielder Jack Rodwell will have a scan amid fears he may face a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Rodwell pulled up after only eight minutes of the 1-0 defeat by BATE Borisov in the Europa League at Goodison Park and was replaced soon after.

A much-changed Everton progressed to the last 32 of the competition despite the result, having already secured second place in Group I.

Manager David Moyes, who selected five debutants for the match, said: "It looks as though Jack has a hamstring injury.

"We will know more when he has a scan. These things happen in football and you have to get on with it."

It means Rodwell is likely to miss the Barclays Premier League match against in-form Birmingham on Sunday and weakens Moyes' hand even more.

Joseph Yobo, Sylvain Distin and Dan Gosling are all injured as well as long-term absentees Mikel Arteta, Phil Jagielka, Phil Neville, Victor Anichebe and James Vaughan.

The experimental Everton side stayed on level terms until the 75th minute when a goal from Aleksandr Yurevich won the game for a more experienced BATE side.

Among the five debuts was a first appearance for Jack Bidwell, who at 16 years and 271 days became the club's youngest player at this level.

Goalkeeper Carlo Nash, 36, also on debut despite joining from Wigan in 2008, told five: "It was great, a bit like a reserve game to be honest.

"I've played a few times with the reserves with these lads and I thought they did tremendously despite the score. They go out fearless these days, the kids.

"The goal was unlucky with a slight deflection but we matched them across the pitch and thought the draw would have been a fair result."

Moyes added: "The young players stuck at it but I was disappointed at the way the goal came about.

"One or two of them did okay. They know when you play at this level you have to keep the ball and limit your mistakes."

BATE coach Viktor Goncharenko said: "I thought we controlled the game in general and that it was only right we won the match.

"To get so many points is a good achievement and we are making progress after playing in the Champions League last season."
