Fabio Capello accused over television outburst

Players chief Gordon Taylor today accused Fabio Capello of undermining the Football Association after the England coach criticised their decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy.

Taylor insists the Italian, who is set to meet with FA chairman David Bernstein amid speculation his job is in jeopardy, was wrong to make his views public and has made the situation "embarrassing" for England's next skipper.

Capello delivered a fierce defence of Terry on Italian broadcaster Rai 1 yesterday following Bernstein and the FA Board's decision to remove the Chelsea defender as skipper for the second time.

The coach wasn't consulted and said: "I have spoken to the chairman and I have said that, in my opinion, one cannot be punished until it's official and the court - a non-sporting court, a civil court - has made a decision to decide if John Terry has done what he has been accused of."

But Taylor is adamant Capello should have kept quiet and said: "The position had been made clear to Fabio Capello and you would expect that if employers had made that decision for a bigger picture he would have followed that.

"It's going to make it embarrassing now for whoever it is who's made England captain now the manager's view have been made public.

"The FA have handled a delicate situation as delicately as possible and they will feel undermined to say the least by the manager coming out and disapproving of their decision. It's a real stand-off, it's not good and it's not what we wanted before the European Championship."

The FA opted to take the armband off Terry when it was determined he would not face trial until after Euro 2012 on July 9 over allegations he racially abused Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road in October.

Former FA chief executive David Davies believes the Italian, whose £6million-a-year contract runs out in the summer, is now in serious trouble with the FA.

Capello did convey his dismay when Bernstein rang to tell him the news on Friday but the fact he has gone public has caused grave concern.

The governing body are looking into the veracity of his comments, but Davies is in no doubt the interview has upset the organisation and said: "It is being taken very seriously by the FA because it may be that Fabio Capello has breached his contract.

"You have to ask what his motive is. You have to suspect he wants to prevent John Terry retiring as a player before Euro 2012 but there are wider
issues.

"You could have what some of the media are calling a morality circus while England are trying to win the second major tournament in football. A contract may have been breached, there is strong leadership now at the FA from David Bernstein. Last week he wasn't slow to take things forward and he may not be slow to do so now."

Terry's lawyers entered a not guilty plea over the Ferdinand charge at Westminster Magistrates' Court last week. It is understood the 31-year-old is still coming to terms with losing the armband and could quit international football. Capello will name his squad on February 25 for the friendly against Holland four days later.
