Gareth Bale jinx strikes again

It is one of the most unenviable records in Premier League history and has become known as "The Curse Of Gareth Bale".

After last night's defeat against Liverpool, the Tottenham Hotspur defender has not been on the winning side when he is in the starting 11 for two and a half years and 22 games.

As of the start of this season, the Welsh defender had never won a Premier League game with Spurs. His 24 Premier League wins without being on the winning side was a record that ended with a substitute appearance against Burnley in September last year.

Although he has since notched up three wins as a substitute, he has failed to break the mysterious jinx where every time his name is on the starting team sheet his side is never victorious.

With manager Harry Redknapp desperate to keep the heat on the league's top four teams, it may seem like the likeliest way to secure victory would be to leave the 19-year-old on the bench.

Bale, who was bought from Southampton for £5 million in the summer of 2007, extended the extraordinary run when he started against Liverpool at Anfield last night in a match Spurs lost 2-0. Spurs declined to comment on whether the jinx would influence team selection.

It is a stark contrast to the Liverpool record of 145 matches where they never lost if striker Ian Rush scored. That run came to an end in the League Cup final against Arsenal in 1987 when a brace from Charlie Nicholas gave the Gunners a 2-1 victory.
