Getting a kicking off the chairman is just part of a busy week

I jumped at the opportunity to go full-time with Stevenage Borough in the early nineties and have since managed to pay the mortgage through the game.
A footballer's life is very different to mine; apart from the obvious money chasm, the time the players spend on their trade a week equates to no more than eight hours' training plus a Saturday fixture.
I am director of football at Barnet and also manager of the England C team, so I end up spinning a few plates. Here is a flavour of an average week in the life of a football lunatic!
Wednesday is my preparation day. I try to get to the gym for 9am and back home by 10.30am, when I then plan as many of my sessions for the next seven days. I am quite meticulous and always draw pictures of my plans.
I use a great programme called Soccer Academy Coach; it makes things so easy for me. At 5.30pm until 8pm, I coach Barnet's young players of the future; kids from eight to 15 years.
Each Thursday I arrive at The Hive, our new training ground, for 9am where I register the scholars and take them for training, one session in the morning and one in the afternoon.
In between that I meet with our first-team manager Mark Stimson to review the week and preview the next.
However, last Thursday I was at Wembley for the launch of the Future Game. Fabio Capello, Stuart Pearce and Sam Allardyce were the principal speakers with the main topic being the development of young players. In the evening, I went to Luton Town for their FA Cup replay with Charlton.
Fridays involve two more sessions with the scholars, apprentices as we know them. This is followed by a goal-setting session for their game the next day. Friday evenings I squeeze in another gym session.
On Saturdays, I usually start work at half-eight. This week I met with Mark Clemmit from the BBC Football League Show.
We did some filming at The Hive as a preview of the game against Accrington Stanley. I then took the scholars for their match against Crystal Palace which resulted in a good win. After that it was a dash to Underhill to take my place in the main stand alongside my chairman, Tony Kleanthous, and his guest, Lord Mawhinney.
I am considering wearing shin pads; it's a nightmare sitting next to Tony. It was thrilling to get a win.
Sunday morning is catch-up time with any jobs at home. On Sunday 4 July, I demolished a wall in our house to make two rooms into one; the skip is still in the drive! I've had my orders to get rid of it for Christmas. I also make time to see my granddaughter followed by another quick gym session. And I'll also do a couple of hours' prep work at night.
Monday is another couple of sessions with the scholars. Late afternoon is our regular football meeting slot with the chairman, first-team staff and our youth staff. We are planning the Barnet revolution! At half-five I'm back out with our youngsters until 8pm.
This Tuesday morning was a trip across London through the torrid Blackwall Tunnel for a midday youth team game against Charlton at Sparrow Lane. I drove and it took 65 minutes. It took the minibus driver two hours and 45 minutes, which meant we had just 15 minutes' prep time. A good performance and another win. The display eased the two-and-a-half hour return journey through the Dartford Tunnel.
All in all, an average week's work load with some real buzzes.
