Guus Hiddink confirmed as Anzhi Makhachkala head coach

Guus Hiddink was today confirmed as the new head coach of Anzhi Makhachkala, ending speculation linking him with a return to Chelsea.

The Dutchman has signed a one-and-half-year contract with the ambitious Russian club, and will also take up the post of vice-president on the club's development.

Hiddink, who left his job as Turkey boss following their failure to qualify for this summer's European Championship, told club website www.fc-anji.ru: "At the end of last year we had long discussions with Anzhi and that's why I have now made a prompt decision.

"I'm glad to accept such an opportunity, to work not only with the football team but also with my friends who invited me here.

"The most significant thing for me is that the club is building plans on football development in the republic.

"It's just as important as the sporting results of the first team, and I'm going to pay special attention to this direction.

"We spoke a lot with [club owner] Suleiman Kerimov about this, after which I understood what a huge project I was invited to.

"I know about the ambitions of the stockholder, the club, fans - now it's known to the whole world. I'll do my best so that the team's play will satisfy these ambitions."

Hiddink had been linked with a return to Chelsea, with Blues owner Roman Abramovich reportedly considering sending another SOS to the 65-year-old amid reports senior players at Stamford Bridge wanted their former caretaker boss to be brought in to replace under-pressure Andre Villas-Boas.

Hiddink was Abramovich's go-to man three years ago when Luiz Felipe Scolari was sacked as Chelsea boss, the Dutchman transforming the club's season and winning the FA Cup.

The Anzhi job marks Hiddink's first permanent club post in six years, during which time he coached Australia, Russia and Turkey - adding to an international CV which already boasted spells in charge of Holland and South Korea.
