Harry Redknapp backing Ledley King for Spurs and England
20 November 2009
Redknapp revealed King will be out for "a few weeks" after he suffered a recurrence of a hamstring problem during the 2-0 win over Sunderland two weeks ago.
King's fitness worries - a chronic knee problem prevents him from training, and he has suffered four separate niggling injuries - prompted England boss Fabio Capello to say it would be "impossible" for the 29-year-old to play in next summer's World Cup.
His contract expires at the end of the season, although Spurs have an option to extend it by one year, and Redknapp said: "I still value him very highly. He is a fantastic player when fit, up there with the best there is. He just needs a run of five or six games to get himself going. At the moment, he keeps picking up niggles, so he is short of match fitness, but I still think we will get enough games from this season."
Regarding England, Redknapp added: "It's just my opinion, but even if he could only play two games, he could still prove to be vital for England. What a player to have to step in if someone is out injured."
