Jermain Defoe: I can beat Wayne Rooney to the Golden Boot

Jermain Defoe today set his sights on winning the Golden Boot after his third hat-trick of the season fired Tottenham into the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The England striker's treble in last night's replay at Leeds helped Spurs win 3-1 and set up a tie against Bolton.

Defoe now has 20 goals in all competitions this season, which is already just two shy of his best total from the 2004-05 campaign.

The forward has scored 15 in the Premier League this term, putting him joint second in the Golden Boot standings alongside Chelsea's Didier Drogba.

They are five behind Wayne Rooney and although the Manchester United striker is in form with six goals from his last three games, Defoe still believes he can finish top of the pile.

"If I do get it, it would be great for everyone," he said. "I just want to keep it going. It [the Golden Boot] is at the back of my mind.

"In terms of goals, this season has been great. When you're playing with good players, you know you'll get the chances, so you just have to score.

"More importantly, I'm thinking about the team, and hopefully trying to make us better. If I'm scoring goals, it helps the team, so I'll continue to try to do that.

"When the other forwards in the division are scoring goals, you want to make sure you're doing that as well.

"As a striker, it's what you're judged on, so that's all I want to do. If I play well and work hard, then I know I'll get my goals.

"Winning the FA Cup this year would be extra special as it would be my first Wembley final."

Spurs, who drew the first match with Leeds 2-2, will meet Bolton at the Reebok on Valentine's Day.

Manager Harry Redknapp said: "It's not an easy place to go, but we're playing very well. We've had one defeat in 11 games."
