John Terry so grateful to 'best fans in the world'

John Terry today hailed England's supporters as the best in the world despite receiving a mixed reception on his first international appearance since being stripped of the captaincy.

The build up to the game was dominated by speculation that the defenderwould be taunted by fans at Wembley over his affair with Wayne Bridge's former girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel.

Although a sizeable section of the 80,602-strong crowd did boo Terry's name when it was read aloud prior to kick-off, any animosity disappeared after half-time as England came from behind to win 3-1.

The Chelsea skipper, who overcame a nervy start as his early touches were jeered to produce a solid display, said: "We have to be all in it together. Along the way we need a little bit of luck and good play from us, and we need everyone behind us which they will be.

"We have the best fans in the world — it is as simple as that. With everyone cheering and us playing full of confidence it is important that we continue this run.

"The supporters were fantastic — the way they got behind me was fantastic and I really appreciate that. I showed my appreciation after the game for that. Obviously there few a few jeers but as a player I can handle that and they are fully entitled to their opinion.

"What they saw is that we have a real chance of going to the World Cup and causing some problems. Egypt are a very good side, great in possession and it was a good build-up to face Algeria at the tournament."

Mohamed Zidan gave the African champions a first-half lead but Peter Crouch came off the bench to score twice either side of a strike from fellow substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Terry stressed the part stand-in skipper Steven Gerrard played in the comeback. He said: "The main thing was to go out there and get the performance and the win whether I got booed or cheered.

"Stevie was magnificent. It means a lot to me that the players played the way we did, coming back from a goal down against a really good side.

"I saw a lot of them in the Africa Cup of Nations and they work really hard and are so good on the ball.

"For us to come back, Stevie played a big part with the armband so well done him and the rest of the squad."

Gareth Barry revealed Fabio Capello's squad have drawn a line under events involving Terry and Bridge but insists there would be no disruption were his Manchester City team-mate to reverse his decision to opt out of the World Cup.

"It is good that the England manager has not closed the door to him and maybe in time he might change his mind," said the midfielder.

"We showed against Egypt that it is all forgotten — even if Wayne did change his mind, we would all be together even more so."
