Lord Triesman praises Capello

FA chairman Lord Triesman feels the credit for England's remarkable World Cup qualifying campaign should be laid squarely at the door of Fabio Capello.

The Three Lions have romped to a record seven successive wins in Group Six and now require just one more from their final three games - the last of which is against Belarus at Wembley - to seal their place at next summer's finals in South Africa.

It is all a far cry from the shambolic Euro 2008 campaign, when England's struggles eventually ended in a failure to qualify thanks to defeats in the last two matches against Russia and Croatia.

As many of the players are the same, Capello's arrival in place of Steve McClaren is the obvious change.

And Triesman has no hesitation in offering the Italian a ringing endorsement.

"The reason prospects of qualification are good is the cohesive unit that Fabio has created," Triesman told an FA fans' forum.

"He is a very inspiring leader."
