Mick McCarthy sacked as Wolves manager after derby disaster

Mick McCarthy was sacked as manager of Wolves today less than 24 hours after he apologised to fans for their humiliating 5-1 derby defeat to West Brom.
Wolves dropped into the relegation zone after yesterday's drubbing, prompting club owner Steve Morgan to break off from his skiing holiday to end McCarthy's five-and-a-half year reign.
Some fans vented their anger towards the directors' box during the game at Molineux and a couple of hundred demonstrated outside the ground long after the final whistle.
In a statement Wolves said: "The board took the difficult decision to terminate Mick's contract after a run which has seen Wolves pick up only 14 points in the last 22 League games, after a promising start to the season, culminating in the 5-1 defeat."
McCarthy took charge of Wolves during 2006 and promised promotion to the top flight within three years which he delivered.
Their first campaign back in the Premier League, in 2009-10, saw Wolves finish 15th and they ensured safety with two games to spare. But they only survived last season thanks to Stephen Hunt's 87th-minute goal against Blackburn on the final day of the season.
Morgan has stayed supportive towards McCarthy during a difficult season but has decided a change is needed with 13 games to go.
Assistant manager Terry Connor has been placed in temporary charge of the team but Neil Warnock and Steve Bruce, sacked by Queens Park Rangers and Sunderland respectively this season, are among the early favourites to take charge.
