Paul Elliott backs Lord Triesman after bid shock

Paul Elliott insists England's 2018 World Cup bid is united behind Lord Triesman and remains on track despite Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards resigning from the campaign.

Standard Sport understands there are no plans to replace Richards, who quit the seven-man board for personal reasons yesterday amid rumours of continuing disagreements with Triesman, his Football Association counterpart.

The board was streamlined after criticism from FIFA vice-president Jack Warner that England's bid was "plodding along" and it is believed that they will now operate with just six members.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore and Manchester United's David Gill are both currently in Asia working to support the bid in an advisory capacity.

Former Chelsea defender Elliott, who sits on the board as the head of bid ambassadors, said: "Sir Dave's decision to step down is regrettable but the Premier League have done some excellent work supporting the bid and have unequivocally said they will continue to do so. One has to concede there is an initial setback but now it is business as usual.

"What is key now is establishing consistency and stability. This is about securing 13 of the 24 votes from the FIFA executive committee members.

"We have a very consistent strategy and we must continue to form relationships. Jane Bateman [FA head of international development], Sir Dave and Lord Triesman have been intrinsic to that."
