Rio Ferdinand gambles with new bid to beat ban

Rio Ferdinand today appealed against the extra one-match ban he was given by the Football Association but runs the risk of being handed a harsher penalty.

A disciplinary commission increased the Manchester United defender's punishment for striking Hull's Craig Fagan to four games because they believed he had made a "frivolous" appeal.

Ferdinand's decision to contest the violent conduct charge meant he was able to play in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester City last Wednesday.

A new hearing is likely to take place before the end of next week but if he loses the case the commission could increase his punishment, ruling him out of the final against Aston Villa on 28 February.
