Rio Ferdinand named England captain as Capello gives Terry the boot

Rio Ferdinand has been appointed England captain after Fabio Capello dramatically axed John Terry.

The FA confirmed that Manchester United defender Ferdinand will become skipper with Steven Gerrard stepping up to vice-captain.

The Chelsea defender met Capello at Wembley this afternoon and was told he would no longer lead the national side in the wake of the revelations of the defender's affair with Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend.

However, his Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti insisted today that Terry will lead Chelsea against Arsenal on Sunday despite being axed.

Terry took part in training today before leaving for Wembley and Ancelotti is adamant the situation isn't getting to the 29-year-old despite the latest blow.

"John has to play against Arsenal because he's one of the most important players in this team and we need strength, experience and quality against them," said the Chelsea manager this afternoon.

"I'm not interested in the meeting. It's a problem for Capello and John Terry. It's not my problem.

"It's not necessary for me to speak to him about his private life. It's his private life and I don't want to know anything about this. I'm only interested in his professional behaviour and that is the top.

"John is in the right frame of mind and is focusing on his job. He's doing very well every day.

"He's the captain of this team so, with his behaviour, he's doing his best for this team.

"He played very well in the last two games. He scored against Burnley. He's in fantastic condition at the moment.

"Sometimes, in the past, some coaches phoned home to control their players. I never did this in my career. I won't in the future. I'm only interested in the players at the training ground and to control behaviour at the training ground."
