Rooney backs Owen for England

Wayne Rooney believes Michael Owen will bounce back from his latest England snub and force his way into Fabio Capello's squad.

Owen has been left out by Capello for the friendly against Holland on Wednesday after being initially included in the provisional 30-man squad.

The 29-year-old hasn't played for his country since the Italian took over in December 2007.

Owen, who joined Manchester United on a free transfer from Newcastle this summer, has scored four goals during pre-season.

And although he was only given 15 minutes as a substitute to impress Capello at Wembley yesterday strike partner Rooney is confident Owen will soon appear again in an England shirt.

Rooney said: "It's the manager's decision, but Michael has looked very sharp in pre-season and I'm sure if he continues that, it won't be too long before he is back in the England squad."

Owen, who has scored 40 goals for England, said: "I have just got to continue doing well and see where that takes me."
