Ryan Giggs signs up for his 22nd campaign
10 February 2012
Ryan Giggs today agreed a one-year contract extension at Manchester United, taking his career at the club into a 22nd season.
The 38-year-old has made a club record 898 appearances and his manager throughout that time, Sir Alex Ferguson, praised the midfielder.
"Ryan is a marvellous player," he said. "He epitomises all my teams here at United; he has constantly re-invented himself, adapted to the changing nature of the game and retained that desire and hunger for success.
"The young players have a great chance to learn from a player who will continue to break records anyone will find hard to beat."
Giggs has won 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions Leagues, a Super Cup, an Intercontinental Cup and a Club World Cup.
The Welshman said: "When I signed my first contract, I never thought I'd be able to play at United for 22 years but I feel good and I know I can still contribute to keeping the team pushing for honours."
Giggs is in the squad for the Premier League clash against Liverpool at Old Trafford tomorrow when the spotlight will be on Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez who will come face to face for the first time since their race row.
Suarez was given an eight-game ban by the Football Association in December after he was found guilty of racially abusing Evra during the League match at Anfield two months earlier.
The Liverpool striker denied the allegations and was backed by the club with their players controversially wearing Suarez T-shirts while warming up for a match the night after his punishment was announced.
On Monday, Kenny Dalglish insisted Suarez's lengthy ban was unjust but Ferguson would not be drawn into the debate today.
"They've said plenty, haven't they?" said the
United manager. "We've kept our dignity throughout. We've kept our counsel. That is the right thing to do in these situations. We'll keep it that way, too and just concentrate on the game."
A quirk of the fixture list means this is Suarez's first away game since returning from the ban.
The Uruguay international is certain to encounter a hostile atmosphere - just as Evra did when he played at Anfield in the FA Cup two weeks ago - but Dalglish refused to discuss that today.
"We will comment on football," said the Liverpool boss. "We enjoy going there to play football and that is all we will concentrate on, we've covered every other aspect of what has to be covered. In the build-up to the FA Cup tie everyone played their part; both clubs, both sets of fans and the referee [Mark Halsey] was magnificent in the way he handled the game."
Liverpool won that fourth-round tie 2-1 when United keeper David de Gea was heavily criticised for his performance but the Spaniard redeemed himself last week with a wonder save to deny Juan Mata a late winner in the 3-3 draw at Chelsea.
Ferguson said: "I don't know if any other goalkeeper in the country would have saved that shot. His speed and agility are outstanding. David knows he had a bad day against Liverpool but goalkeepers can have those days. Last week's performance will help. He saved us a point."
