Scott Parker hopes success will help David Gold in illness battle

Scott Parker today sent a 'get well' message to West Ham co‑owner David Gold, who is seriously ill in hospital.

Gold, 74, is suffering from cholangitis (inflammation of the bile duct) and septicaemia and is being treated with antibiotics.

Gold's daughter, Jacqueline, was at Upton Park yesterday to see West Ham beat Liverpool 3-1 and said: "He is very poorly. He is on powerful antibiotics and we hope to see an improvement in the next few days."

Parker scored the opening goal and dedicated it to his father, who has also been ill.

The midfielder then said he hoped the victory would cheer Gold.

Parker said: "We heard just before kick-off that the chairman isn't too well and our thoughts are with him. Hopefully, he will soon be well and that result will have made it better for him."

Manager Avram Grant added: "I want to wish him all the best. He's a good guy and I am sure this result will be good for him."

Grant revealed that Parker was almost ruled out of the game, after injuring a shoulder in training.

"Three hours before the match we thought there was no way he would play," he said.

"It was a bad, bad injury and he couldn't walk or move his arms. The day before the medical department said he couldn't play but they gave Scott 24 hours of treatment and did a good job."
