Spurs 'in surprise move for Phil Neville'

Spurs are set to make the surprise signing of Everton captain Phil Neville, according to reports.

Neville has impressed this season and showed all his experience in keeping Spurs winger Gareth Bale quiet when the two sides met recently.

However, manager Harry Redknapp described the prospect of capturing the former Manchester United man as "difficult".

"He's a great player but I'm sure David Moyes knows just how important he is to his team," said Redknapp.

"He's a real leader for them and David wouldn't want to lose him so it'd be a difficult one."

Spurs have proposed a fee of £1.5million according to the Daily Mail, with the newspaper claiming talks are at an advanced stage.

Redknapp has so far signed South African defender Bongani Khumalo in the January transfer window, while David Beckham is due to begin training with the club today.

Meanwhile, Birmingham hope to complete Tottenham winger David Bentley's loan deal in the next 24 hours, subject to him passing a medical.

McLeish confirmed: "Bentley is doing a medical. It might run into two days.

"It will be good to sign him because He has got a bit of quality and class as a footballer. His delivery at set-pieces is excellent as well. He is a natural footballer."
