Stick insect? No, Peter Crouch shows he's a lion king

The only surprise, given Peter Crouch's scoring record for his country, is that he wasn't already a certainty for South Africa even before his two goals against Egypt.

The Tottenham man's pair brought his England total to 20 in 37 matches, a strike rate that is right up there with the best.

Crouch's critics point out that most of his goals have been against the also-rans of international football.

The Spurs striker would answer that by pointing out that you can only play — and score — against the opposition put in front of you. Goals are goals, it's as simple as that.

Crouch has netted some important goals, the winner against Trinidad & Tobago in England's opening match at the 2006 World Cup being a prime example.

The problem for Crouch has always been his physical appearance — he resembles a cross between a set of scaffolding and a stick insect.

At first sight, the 29-year-old looks nothing like an international footballer but as opposing defenders have discovered to their cost, first appearances can be deceptive.

For a tall, often awkward-looking player, his first touch is good and his goals last night emphasised his technical ability.

Crouch hasn't enjoyed a prolific season domestically — 10 goals for Spurs with only half coming in the Premier League — but international football seems to suit him.

Opposing teams haven't yet worked him out and for defenders, he remains a nightmare to play against — all angles and sharp edges.

Crouch's role this summer may well be similar to last night, coming off the bench and making an impact. For now, though, he can book his seat with extra legroom on that England plane to South Africa.
