We must not blow chance to make history, says Carlo Ancelotti
07 May 2010
Chelsea know victory at Stamford Bridge will give them their first Premier League title since 2006 and take them nearer their first Double, which could be completed in next week's FA Cup Final against Portsmouth.
Ancelotti's side, who lead Manchester United by just a point, have had many chances to take firmer control of the title race only to lose against sides they were expected to beat.
Wigan were the first team to defeat them back in September and United, who are at home to Stoke, are hoping for a similar upset.
Ancelotti has told his players they can't afford to be complacent and added: "Nothing is decided.
We have to play with a lot of intensity. There are no other games after this and so there is no chance of a recovery.
"To be champions we have to play as we played against Liverpool. We have to maintain the same confidence in our play and the same determination.
"We are in a very good situation. We wanted to arrive at the end of the season with more points. It's only one more point but we can decide our destiny in our home, Stamford Bridge.
"We have to be ready and we have to play 90 minutes. Wigan will come to play this game and try their best. They beat us the last game we played so we have to pay attention."
Chelsea's worst run in February and March coincided with the scandal surrounding John Terry's behaviour off the field, which ended up costing him his job as England skipper.
Didier Drogba has claimed the furore surrounding Terry did affect the team but Ancelotti says neither the 29-year-old nor Ashley Cole, who has had some marital issues of his own, worried him.
He said: "That was not a problem for me. Those were personal issues and they — Ashley and John Terry — were able to keep these problems outside the training ground, so I never spoke about the personal issues of my players.
"If they'd needed to speak with me about this, I would have been able to do so and help. But if they don't ask me to do something, it's not my problem. This season we had some problems but every team has a problem during the season.
"We had some difficulties, lost some games, and had difficult moments after the Manchester City and Inter defeats but we moved on."
Drogba believes Ancelotti will have to be regarded as one of the best managers in Chelsea's history if he guides them to the Double in his first season. The Italian is the fourth manager the club have employed since Jose Mourinho, who won five major trophies in his three-year reign, was fired in September 2007.
But Drogba says Ancelotti has transformed the team since he joined from AC Milan last summer and will deserve all the credit if Chelsea finish the campaign with silverware.
Drogba, who was last night voted fans' Player of the Year, said: "There are many ways to win in football but his way is one of the best. Since Carlo came we have grown in confidence.
"This is his first year and it could be the best season for him at Chelsea."
