West Ham's ground-share plan

West Ham are in talks with Essex cricket club about a ground share at the Olympic Stadium.

Essex believe staging Twenty20 matches at the Stratford venue may attract new audiences and are targeting the cricket-loving Asian community in the East End.

They could rent the venue in the summer from West Ham, if the football club are successful in their bid to move to the stadium after the 2012 Games.

Cricket has already been trialled at the old Wembley Stadium and Stamford Bridge. But potential obstacles to bringing cricket to the Olympic Stadium include the size and shape of the pitch and the need for a professional standard cricket square in the centre.

Former Essex and England skipper Graham Gooch, West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady and Newham Council will meet this month to discuss the proposal.

A West Ham source said: "We have been discussing ideas with Essex and the possibility of staging Twenty20 games at the Olympic Stadium is just one of them."
