Forget Europe and wrap up title, says Fergie

Sir Alex Ferguson has told his players to make up for their Champions League disappointment by winning the Premiership in style over the next five days.

Victory for Manchester United away to neighbours Manchester City at lunchtime on Saturday and a failure by Chelsea to win at Arsenal on Sunday would see Ferguson wrap up his ninth Premiership title with two games to spare.

Even if Chelsea rally after their own European exit and win at the Emirates Stadium, United can take the title by winning at City and avoiding defeat at Stamford Bridge when the top two meet on Wednesday.

Ferguson said: "I don't know if Chelsea can win at Arsenal but I think the best way for us to approach it is not to rely on anyone to help us.

"That's the wrong attitude. We've got to concentrate on winning against City.

"Last year City took a physical approach and the referee didn't do anything about it.

"What we have to do this time is play our football and not get embroiled in any physical contest.

"It's a big test, as derby games are never easy but hopefully we can navigate it and that will give us a big chance."

Wednesday's defeat in Milan ended United's hopes of repeating their 1999 Treble and denied Ferguson a shot at winning the Champions League for a second time, but the Double is still on, with United facing Chelsea in the FA Cup Final at Wembley on May 19.

Ferguson added: "At the end of the campaign you hope you come out with some silverware and I've always said if you win one trophy you should be delighted."
