The 62-year-old former Tottenham boss opted to leave the Hornets in order to spend more time at home following a serious family illness.

Stepping aside: Keith Burkinshaw

Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd admitted he was disappointed to see him go but hailed the impact he has had at Vicarage Road during his two-and-a-half years at the club.

"It's a sad day for me that Keith has been forced to leave my side to make sure he prioritises his family life, of course that is far more important than football and always will be," Boothroyd told the club's official website.

"He is one of the great men to have worked in this game, and nobody will ever be able to take away his achievements and the manner in which he conducted himself - always with dignity and pride."

Burkinshaw, who managed Spurs between 1976-84, brought Ossie Ardiles and Ricardo Villa to the club and won the FA Cup twice and the UEFA Cup during his time at White Hart Lane.
