Fortune's hat-trick gives him title shot

Jimmy Fortune as good as sealed the jockeys' title at Royal Ascot with a 339-1 treble on Tariq, Nannina and Royal Oath.

Added to his victory on Full House on Tuesday that gives him a total of four, three clear of any other jockey at the meeting so far.

Fortune is a best-priced 4-7 with Stan James to ride the most winners and he has Gold Cup hope Sergeant Cecil to look forward to today.

The Irishman, who celebrated his 35th birthday last week, received warm praise from John Gosden, trainer of Winter Forest Stakes heroine Nannina and easy Hunt Cup winner Royal Oath.

Gosden said: "Jimmy is a superb horseman and very strong. He understands his horse well. He is very popular in the Weighing Room which can be important when you are asking for room during a race.

"He is a very solid jockey who doesn't have silly ups and disastrous downs.

"The plan was always the Hunt Cup with Royal Oath. Now his handicap days are over and he'll go to America in the autumn for a Group race over a mile.

"Nannina is now a Group winner at two, three and four — not many horses achieve that. She is not over raced and could finish the year in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf."

Fortune was at his best in the Jersey Stakes where he tracked US Ranger on Tariq and quickened past the favourite to score by two and a half lengths.

Winning trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam said: "Jimmy and I are great mates. He rode my first ever Royal Ascot winner."

The classiest performance of the day was Manduro's length-and-a-quarter beating of Dylan Thomas in the Prince of Wales's Stakes.

The five-year-old is now unbeaten in three runs this season when he has been ridden by Stephane Pasquier, who was registering his first Royal Ascot victory.

Trainer Andre Fabre has mapped out an ambitious programme for the horse, taking in the Prix Jacques le Marois, the Arc and the Breeders' Cup Classic.
